Reading Room. As there will be renovation works in the Reading Room starting in the gents’ toilets next Tuesday 13th January and expected to last two weeks, it has been suggested that we do not use the Reading Room for Wednesday Drop In Coffee. There will still be Coffee on Wednesday but on 14th at Hollycroft (next to Old School) and on 21st at Foxley (pink house at the bottom of the village). We look forward to seeing you at 10.30 on Wednesday as usual. Many thanks for the responses about the village photo, a number of you recalled it was from the millennium, after a lunch in the barn.
Another copy came to light with this written on the back: K Bailey Photographer Great Coxwell Millennium Celebration June 24th 2000 (which was a cold Saturday according to some) There are some faces I recognise, but I'll try to get more names - anyone you recognise please email [email protected] with who they are and where they are in the photo. Many thanks, For those interested in knowing when the Church services occur in Great Coxwell and other villages of this Benefice, details are printed on the back page of the recent Church Newsletter. An electronic version is attached and the last page with the calendar is shown below.

Back in 1986 there was a project to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the Domesday Book, the previous post with the photo had me wondering whether the photo was from 1986. Anyway I tracked down the entry for Great Coxwell from the national archives and you can review it here: https://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukgwa/20120318181300/http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-424000-192000 Quite an interesting read and certainly of it's time. I've been passed a couple of photos by a villager who is keen to know when they were taken, there are definitely some current villagers in the photo.
Probably best viewed on computer rather than a phone, if you click on the image below it will take you to the high resolution image and you can zoom in to spot the faces. Please let me know ([email protected]) if you spot yourself and others and I will try to fill in all the names and republish it. But more importantly in order to settle a bet we need to know when it was taken, what was the occasion and year? Email me at [email protected] with any information you have, thanks in advance. Happy New Year all - hope you've all had a nice break over Christmas and the New Year, now it's time for the next Men's Night which will be held in the Reading Room on Thursday 15th January from 7pm to 9pm.
The format will be the same as before, drop in anytime from 7pm, bring along your own beverage of choice, it's all very informal. The Reading Room has glasses so no need to bring anything else. Look forward to seeing you. |
