Dog Dirt in the Village. Please always pick up after your dog and take it home We have received an email from a gentleman in Canada and wondered if you would be able to help him with his research? Our phone number is 01367 240281. We would love to hear from you!
This is the email received 26.11.16: Ladies and Gentlemen: I am writing with an enquiry about a place-name that occurs in the Faringdon area. As a child, I used to spend a lot of time in the village of Little Coxwell, where my grandparents used to live. I also had relatives in Great Coxwell. Between the two villages runs the A420 Faringdon Road. At some point on that road, and situated between the two villages, there is/was a place that was referred to by the local inhabitants as "Chowle". I see that the name "Chowle" is still in use, for example, in the name of a local B&B. There is also a “Chowle Cottage” in Great Coxwell. For linguistic but also personal reasons, I would be very interested to discover the meaning or origin of the name/word "Chowle". My research to determine the meaning of the word has revealed nothing definitive. I have found several references to “chowle/choule/chole/chaul = jowl”, but that does not seem to fit in my context. I would be grateful for any light you can throw on this matter, or any clue that you can give me so that I can pursue my search with more hope of success. Many thanks in advance for any assistance that you can give. With best regards Derek Jordan (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) November 26th Saturday - National Trust 'Listening Session' 10am - 12 Noon, Reading Room
